Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that freely explore the basics of the Christian faith. No pressure. No follow up. No charge.

Alpha gives everyone the opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, informal environment. We meet together, hear a short talk about an aspect of the Christian faith, and then have the opportunity to share thoughts. During the discussion, everyone is welcome to contribute their opinions and no question is off limits. You are also just free to relax and listen.
We explore questions such as: Is there a God? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going?
The course runs for about 10 weeks, and features a longer Saturday session together, towards the end of the course.

Alpha is based on a series of DVD sessions created by Rev Nicky Gumbel from Holy Trinity Church, Brompton.

Who is Alpha For?
Alpha is for anyone. People attend from a variety of backgrounds, religions, and viewpoints. They come to investigate questions about the existence of God, and the meaning of life. Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that really changes life. Some might just be curious!

Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Everyone is welcome.

"I believe the Alpha Course touches lives. I have seen so many people find a personal relationship with God and a quiet strength in their life after doing the course – me included – and it takes a proud man to say he never needs any help."

History of Alpha
Alpha began as an introduction to the Christian faith for new Christians attending Holy Trinity Brompton church in central London.

When curate Nicky Gumbel took over the running of Alpha at HTB in 1990, he noticed its appeal to those who would not describe themselves as Christians. Alpha became increasingly popular and, after the first training conference for church leaders in 1993, began running in other churches in the UK and around the world.

27 million people have done Alpha in 169 countries and 112 languages.
Alpha at the High Kirk
Each Alpha Course runs over a period of 12 weeks. We do not run Alpha courses continually at the High Kirk, but rather on the basis of need, when there is a sufficient number of people interested in attending one to make it worthwhile.

The courses are led by a team of mature Christians from the High Kirk. They normally take place in the Church Hall on Schoolwell St or in St Monach's Aisle. The course includes a special "Holy Spirit" Weekend, which is normally held somewhere else.
